A closed-circuit cooling tower, also known as a closed cooling tower or evaporative fluid cooler, is a high-efficiency cooling device that combines water-cooling and air-cooling technologies. It uses a closed-loop system that completely isolates the process fluid (water, oil, etc.) from the outside air, ensuring both effective cooling and fluid purity.
Its working principle is a typical "dual-circuit" system. The internal circuit circulates the process fluid through a heat exchange coil. The external circuit involves spray water evenly distributed over the coil, while a fan draws in ambient air. As the spray water evaporates, it absorbs heat from the fluid inside the coil. The warm, moist air is expelled, while unevaporated water returns to the basin for recirculation. The two circuits never mix, so the internal fluid remains clean.
Compared to open cooling towers, closed-circuit cooling towers offer key advantages. They protect water quality, preventing contamination, scaling, and blockages. They are highly water-efficient, reducing consumption by up to four-fifths. They save energy by intelligently adjusting operation based on real-time temperature. They are also more environmentally friendly by reducing water pollution and drift.
