How Often Should Spray Water in a Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower Be Changed? And How Should It Be Treated?
Many customers, after purchasing a closed-circuit cooling tower, focus only on whether the internal circulating medium is clean-but overlook the external spray water.
Spray water is the water that is sprayed onto the outer surface of the coils, evaporating and absorbing heat. It doesn't contact the internal circulating medium, but its quality directly determines whether the coil outer surface scales, how well heat dissipates, and how many years the equipment will last.
So how to manage spray water is something every closed-circuit cooling tower user needs to understand clearly.
I. Why Does Spray Water Get Dirty?
Spray water circulates inside the tower, continuously evaporating and concentrating. The concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water keeps rising, gradually forming scale on the coil outer surface, fill surfaces, and the bottom of the collection basin.
At the same time, spray water is exposed to air, so dust and impurities fall in. Under sunlight, algae also grow.
So spray water getting dirty is inevitable-it's just a matter of how fast.

II. How Often Should Spray Water Be Changed?
There's no single answer-it depends on three factors:
1. Source Water Quality
Is it tap water or industrial water? How hard is the water? The harder the water, the faster it scales, and the more frequently you'll need to change it.
2. Operating Environment
In workshops with heavy dust, or installation locations near dust-generating areas, spray water gets dirty faster.
3. Whether Water Treatment Is Used
If a water softening system is installed, with scale inhibitors and biocides added, spray water can go a long time without changing. If no treatment is done at all, it could turn murky within a few months.
General recommendations:
No water treatment system: completely change every 3-6 months
With water treatment system: change once a year
Regularly top up water to maintain normal water level

III. How Should Spray Water Be Treated?
1. Softening Treatment
The most effective method. Install a water softening device to reduce calcium and magnesium ion content, reducing scale at the source.
2. Regular Chemical Dosing
Add scale inhibitors to prevent scale formation. Add biocides to inhibit algae growth. Choose chemicals that won't corrode the coil material.
3. Install Filtration Equipment
Install filters on the spray water circulation piping to intercept suspended impurities.
4. Regular Cleaning of the Collection Basin
Sludge and impurities easily settle at the bottom of the basin. Regular cleaning keeps spray water clean.
5. Electronic Descaling Devices
Use electromagnetic fields to alter the crystallization form of calcium and magnesium ions, making them less likely to attach to pipe walls. Effective for mild scaling.

IV. Oasis Bingfeng's Approach
Oasis Bingfeng closed-circuit cooling towers include the following design features for spray water management:
Automatic Water Replenishment: The collection basin is equipped with an automatic fill valve that replenishes fresh water when the level drops.
Automatic Basin Cleaning Device: With patented technology, sludge at the bottom is automatically scraped away-no manual entry required.
Spray Water Circulation Cooling Design: Spray water is pre-cooled through the fill before being sprayed onto the coils, reducing evaporation and scaling at the coil surface.

Optional Water Treatment System: Depending on the customer's water quality, a softening device or electronic descaler can be supplied.
Recommended Maintenance Schedule:
Weekly: Check water level, remove floating debris
Monthly: Clean spray filters
Quarterly: Check spray water quality, change water if necessary
Annually: Thoroughly clean the collection basin
