Closed-Circuit Cooling Tower Selection Checklist: 8 Key Parameters to Confirm Before Ordering

A well-specified cooling tower starts with clear project data.
Many buyers focus only on cooling capacity and price. But capacity alone is not enough. Without accurate operating parameters, even a high-quality tower may fail to meet real-world requirements.
This checklist helps you prepare the essential information before contacting a supplier.
1. Cooling Load
Define the actual heat load that must be removed.
This can be expressed in kW, tons of refrigeration, or kcal/h. If the exact load is unknown, provide the process description, equipment type, and operating schedule.
2. Inlet and Outlet Water Temperature
Specify the required inlet and outlet temperatures of the process fluid.
The temperature difference between inlet and outlet directly affects tower sizing. A smaller temperature difference usually requires a larger heat exchange area.
3. Flow Rate
Confirm the circulating flow rate of the process fluid.
Flow rate influences pipe sizing, pump selection, and internal coil design. Do not confuse process fluid flow with spray water flow.
4. Wet Bulb Temperature
Provide the local design wet bulb temperature.
This is one of the most important environmental parameters. A tower sized for a low wet bulb temperature may underperform during hot summer conditions if the design value is too optimistic.
5. Process Fluid Type
Identify what is circulating inside the coil.
Common fluids include water, glycol-water mixture, hydraulic oil, or chemical process fluids. The fluid type affects heat transfer performance, pressure drop, and material compatibility.
6. Coil Material and Corrosion Environment
Select the coil material based on the operating environment.
Copper: high thermal conductivity, but not suitable for ammonia or sulfur-rich environments
Stainless Steel 304/316: strong corrosion resistance, suitable for industrial and coastal conditions
Galvanized Steel: cost-effective, but limited corrosion resistance
If the installation site is near the sea, chemical plants, or heavy industrial areas, corrosion resistance should be prioritized.
7. Installation Space and Layout
Provide available space, access restrictions, and installation location.
Important details include:
Foundation dimensions
Maintenance access
Distance from walls or buildings
Hot air discharge direction
Noise restrictions
These factors influence tower dimensions, fan direction, and structural design.
8. Power Supply and Control Requirements
Confirm the local power supply and control expectations.
Typical items include:
Voltage and frequency
Fan motor power
VFD requirement
Spray pump configuration
Control panel language
Remote monitoring or alarm signals
Clear electrical requirements help avoid site modification costs later.

Why This Checklist Matters
Providing complete data at the quotation stage reduces the risk of incorrect selection. It also allows the manufacturer to perform accurate thermal calculations rather than relying on rough estimates.
A professional supplier should be able to confirm:
Required heat exchange area
Fan power and air volume
Water consumption
Noise level
Delivery lead time
If a supplier quotes without asking for these parameters, treat the quotation with caution.

Quick Checklist Summary
Cooling load
Inlet/outlet temperature
Flow rate
Wet bulb temperature
Process fluid type
